MEMORY, LEARNING & IMPROVING CONCENTRATION

Hey Everyone ! How was your day so far ? Today I'm going to share with you guys about Memory Concentration & Reading System .

One of the best way is to have a good learning skills . Below is the ilustration about learning method called ' The learning pyramid '

If you're involve with student learning , you probably familiar with the learning pyramid . The diagram above breaks down different learning methods that will affect your learning and study skills . We remember 10% of what we read , 20% of what we hear , 30%  what we see and 90% of what we do .

Next , What is brain and memory ?  Why we called our brain and memory as a computer ? So I'll write about this below .

BRAIN
- Physical place
- Part of visible , tangible world of body

MEMORY
- Allow us to remember facts and experiences .
- Consists of encoding , storing information , retrieval and help to recall .
- When we see something , we can trace it and automatically put in the brain .

When we learn and remember , we will encode and retrieve the information that we see . The analogy is like a computer .

Examples of computer components and what are the components analogy to human ???

Human
Computer
Encoding/ input
The 5 senses ; ears, mouth, nose, skin and eyes
Keyboard and camera
Storage
3 types of memory – SM, STM and LTM
Hard disk, thumb drive
Retrieval/ output
Writing, talking
Computer screen, printer

The Storage
There are 3 different types of memory , according to Information Processing Model ( Atkinson & Shiffrin's model in Satrock , 2011 )
  1. Sensory Memory ( SM ) : A lot of information coming from human 5 senses will be stored in the SM immediately . If you pay more attention , it will go to the short-term memory ( STM ) . If one does not stay in line , then the information will be lost .
  2. Short-term Memory ( STM ) : Very restricted storage . From the SM , information will be transmitted to STM . While in the STM , information must be REPEATED or use some ACTIVE LEARNING techniques in order to get information to LTM , or else information will be forgotten . Thus , students must know that applying memory strategies can boost the memory capability .
  3. Long-term Memory ( LTM ) : Unlimited and have a huge storage . From STM , information moved to LTM and stored here for later use (retrieval) . If the information is not being used , forgetting may be occur . Having good skills during encoding earlier would help in retrieval process .

Not to forget , I want to share with you guys about the memory strategies .

Why Memory Strategies is important ?

Memory strategies will help students in their encoding , storing and retrieving the information ( easily remember and recall )

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR MEMORY
  • Massed practice vs Space practice

           - Massed practice ( bad ) , study all the materials given at one time . Don't have time to understand , remember and organize the information . (Short-term Memory cannot keep many information at one time . )

           - Space practice ( good ) , involves space time and manage well time for studying . Spaced practice allows the information to easily absorb in the Long-term Memory . Don't forget to take some breaks between learning seasons . This allow you to think and organize your information well .

  • Break reading material down ( no cramming ) for some period of time . Exp ; 1/2 topics a day instead of reading all chapters in a day before tests .
  • Rehearsal , repeat the information numerous of time .
  • Elaboration strategies
Acronyms / Catchwords
    - E.g : PWTC = Putra World Trade Centre
KLIA  = Kuala Lumpur International Airport
Acrotics / Catchphrases
( How to remember the rainbow colours)
   - E.g : Michael - Merah
              Jackson - Jingga
              Kills      - Kuning
              His        - Hijau
              Brother - Biru
              In          - Indigo
              USA     -  Ungu

STRATEGIES FOR IMRPOVING CONCENTRATION

What you know about concentration ? Concentration means focusing your attention on what you're doing . There are many causes of poor concentration that every student will faced . The main causes are lack of attention while in the class , lack of interest in the subject , lack of motivation from parents and teachers , distraction from others , uncomfortable study environment  .

  • use motivational and organizational skills
  • choose your own favourite environment to study
  • use active learning strategies
  • observe your concentration
READING / STUDY SYSTEM    ( SQ3R)

SQ3R is an abbreviation to help you remember the steps and to make references in the simpliest way . The symbols stand for the steps followed in using the method Survey , Question , 3R ( Read , Recite , Review

  1.  Survey : The purpose of surveying the chapter is to get a general idea about what is going to be about and what kind of information that will be given .
  2. Question : (Before classes ) turn each boldfaced heading into a question by using one of the following words : Who , What , When , Where , Why and How .
  3. Read : Read the section to find the anwser , the purpose of reading is to find the exactly answer for the question .
  4. Recite : Recite the answer to each question to yourself  , use your own words or paraphrase the author's words .
  5. Review : To review , cover the answers and try to ask yourself the questions . If you cant answer the questions , look at your notes and test yourself again either you can answer or not .
